How Often Should Transformer Radiators Be Cleaned?

The recommended cleaning frequency for transformer radiators should be adjusted flexibly based on the operating environment and equipment type. Generally, cleaning is recommended once a quarter. In harsh environments, this can be reduced to once a month, and in favorable environments, it can be extended to once every six months.

Specific recommendations under different conditions are as follows:

Normal Environment (Indoor, Dry, Low Dust)

A thorough cleaning is recommended every 3 to 6 months.

Routine inspections can remove surface dust and maintain good ventilation of the radiator fins.

Harsh Environment (Outdoor, Dusty, Humid, Chemical Plant Area, or Coastal Area)

Dust, salt spray, and corrosive gases accelerate dirt buildup and metal corrosion, affecting heat dissipation efficiency.

Monthly cleaning is recommended. Additional cleaning should be performed after strong winds, sandstorms, or heavy rain if necessary.

Stubborn stains can be removed by combining compressed air blowing or wiping with a neutral detergent.

Recommendations for Dry-Type Transformers

Dry-type transformers primarily rely on air cooling. The radiators (i.e., the surfaces of the windings and core) are prone to dust accumulation and require periodic maintenance:

Weekly Inspection: Gently sweep away surface dust with a soft brush;

Monthly Deep Cleaning: Use 0.2–0.3 MPa compressed air to clean dust from top to bottom;

Quarterly Fine Cleaning: Wipe with a 60%–70% isopropanol solution. After cleaning, allow to stand for 40–60 minutes and check the insulation resistance before powering on.

Oil-Immersed Transformer Radiators

When cleaning, focus on removing oil and dust between the radiator fins to avoid clogging air ducts.

A dry brush or low-pressure sprayer with a neutral detergent can be used for cleaning. Take precautions against water and moisture to prevent water from entering the junction box or the top of the bushing.
